A national retail store is coming to the original location of Dale’s Real Pit Bar-B-Q in Fort Pierce.

Coldwell Banker Realtor Hoyt C. Murphy posted on Facebook on Wednesday that his agency recently closed on the one-acre commercial site at 1915 N. U.S. Hwy. 1 that served as the first home of the popular BBQ restaurant that’s been a staple on the Treasure Coast for many years. Murphy said the property had been owned by the Mihalak family for more than 40 years.

According to Murphy’s post, in 1962 Dale Ernsberger bought the property that had a barn structure “with a lot of pecky cypress” on the south side of the property near U.S. Hwy. 1.

The site above was recently sold by Coldwell Banker Realtor Hoyt C. Murphy Jr. The site once housed the original Dale’s Real Pit Bar-B-Q restaurant.

“He enclosed the barn and built a BBQ pit. The restaurant had no A/C but was a big hit,” Murphy wrote. “Mr Ernsberger later built the brick home in the rear.”

About 10 years later, Ernsberger built Dales Real Pit Bar-B-Q on S. U.S. Hwy 1, where it has remained as a local landmark since that time, Murphy said.

As for the original Dale’s Bar-B-Q location, the building became Eduardo’s Italian Restaurant, then the Shrimp Spot, a bait and tackle store. A fire eventually destroyed the building and it was torn down.

Murphy said the home on the property is in bad disrepair and will be demolished. He added that a national retail store plans to build at the location but didn’t reveal the name of the business or the selling price for the property.
