Port St. Lucie artist wins prestigious mosaic contest

Artwork will be displayed on sidewalk in Stuart

A Port St. Lucie artist has been selected to participate in a special mosaic art project in Stuart.

Carol Schiff has been working alongside mosaic instructor/artist Corina Pelloni to create a mosaic from a dolphin painting she completed several years ago. Her work soon will be on display in Stuart after she won a contest that was put on by the Creek District of Arts and Entertainment. Pelloni also serves as a board member of that group.

“I just thought it was such a cool idea and it would be so neat if I could do a piece of artwork and it would be preserved in the sidewalk,” Schiff said. “How cool is that? I have grandchildren that live in Stuart and I want that for them. I want them to be able to say my grandmother did that.”

Schiff is new to mosaics – this one is her first. She said she was “shocked” to win the contest and then a level of fear set in.

“I had a lot of sleepless nights after I won, hoping that I could fulfil the obligation,” Schiff said with a chuckle. “But it’s gotten better.”

Pelloni said the Creek District Board narrowed down the finalists in the contest and then the public selected Schiff as the winner.

“The public wanted to see a dolphin mosaic,” she said.
