St. Lucie sheriff offers tips to avoid becoming victim of scams

The St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office is warning area residents about a variety of scams that have been reported in the local area.

To avoid becoming the victim of scams, residents are advised to:

  • Never open up or use a personal bank account to deposit or transfer funds for someone else.
  • Donate to verified charities to ensure your donations reach their target destination.
  • Beware of requests to download apps that allow access to your device.
  • Be wary of “get rich quick” or “easy money” schemes – especially those that are unsolicited.
  • Don’t provide information like your bank account, personal identifying information, passwords, user IDs or PINs to solicitors.
  • Don’t verify a one-time passcode that you didn’t request.
  • Don’t click links from unknown sources.
  • Don’t deposit checks from unknown sources.
